And What of the Holy Spirit?

How often have we heard someone say “If only God performed more miracles today…”? More people would believe, etc, etc. But let’s look at the miracle that surpassed all other miracles of its time: the Transfiguration. Up to that time in history, was there ever a more impressive miracle? Jesus, in all His glory, revealed to three Apostles. Truly He is the Saviour, the Son of God. Seeing the Transfiguration, who could dispute this? Yet, a short time later, two of the three Apostles would abandon Him in His time of need. Only one did not, even after witnessing such a spectacular miracle. And then the miracle of all miracles: the Resurrection. Yet, even after Jesus appeared to His disciples they still cowered and hid behind closed doors to pray. Mary could have easily had a good snicker at the Ascension when Jesus commanded them to convert all nations. These guys? I am sure she did not as she was intimate with the Holy Spirit and knew what could be. It wasn’t until Pentecost that this poor bunch could finally become what they were expected to be. When I pray my rosary and particularly the third Glorious Mystery, I can’t help but meditate on the pre-Pentecost and post-Pentecost Apostles. Only with the Holy Spirit could Peter not only give a speech to so many people but convert 3000 of them. Only with the Holy Spirit could James have the courage to become the first Apostle martyred, the other Apostles fearlessly following. Pray, then, that the Holy Spirit fill our lives and those for whom we pray so that we may come out of our hiding, live our spiritual lives without fear, and help others to do the same. Queen of Heaven, pray for us!
